Multiple Literacies and Discourse

In “Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction,” by James Paul Gee speaks on the term “discourse” which is a method of living and a manner of being in the world. For instance, how to act around certain people or places. As I was reading this text I believed that Discourse has to do with reading or writing but as I got further into the reading it mostly speaks on your character and what kind of person you should be around certain people. Another point in mind is that discourse isn’t something that you can master in one day. It’s something that you have to observe and adjust to the behavior of others around that setting. An example of this is going to a professional workplace. Everyone is wearing formal clothing and speaking professionally. To work in that area you must adjust to that discourse.

In “Multiple Literacies, New Literacies, and Teacher Education,” by Gina Cervetti, James Damico, and P. David Pearson, speaks on how literacy can influence preservice education. As I was reading further into the article it discusses the difference between new literacy and multiple literacy. New Literacies have technology incorporated and multiple literacies have a variety of literacy and “an increased sensitivity to cultural differences.” New Literacy is a great approach in a classroom because teachers can be able to bring up videos that are related to the subject and on top of that students will be more engaged in the lesson. As for multiple literacies, teachers can achieve the goal of setting up a comfortable familiar learning environment for their students. I believe that using these two literacy skills in a classroom is a great way to create a learning, safe environment in a classroom.
