Discourse & discourse

Paul Lee

In “Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction“, James Paul Lee breaks down Discourse in all of its different types of ways. He explains how, “Two Discourses can interfere with one another, like two languages; aspects of one Discourse can be transferred to another Discourse, as one can transfer a grammatical feature from one language to another.” (page 9) Paul Lee explains how primary Discourse has been influenced by secondary Discourse that one uses in school, work, or business. The secondary (d)iscourse we use amongst our friends is not the same Discourse we use when talking to our parents. Our primary Discourse is what we have learned most likely from our parents or household is how we were first taught. He also explains how within a Discourse, you are always teaching more than writing or reading. People who have no social practices do not engage in Discourse, nor have the ability to.

Education

In, “Multiple Literacies, New Literacies, and Teacher Education“, by Gina Cervetti, James Damico, and P. David Pearson, it speaks on the different literacy’s that teachers try to get across to their students. A good point is brought up where it says, “”Teachers must “realize how literacy is changing and be redefined and how youth are using literacies in differential ways” and to understand the “post-literate culture” in which we live””. I believe this to be true. This is because times are changing, kids are exposed to a technology culture like never before. Teaching and education should adapt to the current technology culture for the students benefit. (page 2)
