According to Elizabeth Wardle, You cant teach writing in general. She explains that in some way or form, you need to write with a purpose so technically you can’t write in general. Writing needs to have an audience, a purpose, and context and because of that writing is always in particular. To sum up her thoughts, writing cant be general, and it is only situational and I believe that is correct to an extent. Anytime you are writing it is for a reason whether it is a message for communication, a response for a question in a class, or taking personal notes to remember something. Those are all individual reasons and situations where writing is used for a different purpose.

In Catherine Savini’s article, she argues that students should learn to find the problem in their prompt in order to respond. She says this because most assignments present a problem already and make it easier to respond. However in the case that there is no immediate problem presented, many students may have trouble trying to create a problem or prompt to work off of. I think Savini’s argument can be used along with Wardles for a few reasons. Savini says Students should know how to find a problem, or basically create a purpose for writing. Elizabeth Wardle’s whole argument was that writing was situational, and Savini says the same. Savini tells us that even when a situation isn’t clearly presented to the writer, they still need to work towards finding the proper reason and purpose to write.
