As a black feminine person in America, a lot of aspects of my identity as an African American is picked apart by society be it my hair, dialect, or skin tone. It baffles me how people have the audacity to demand an immediate change if I don’t fit their criteria.
“But Mari, what does this have to do with grammar?”
It has a lot to do with it.
Wien’s article “I won’t hire people who use poor grammar. Here’s why.” Rubs me the wrong way. It has the same energy as an employer turning down a black woman because of the color of her hair. People should be allowed to make mistakes and then learn from said mistakes. Basing someone’s intellect because of their grammar is stupid. This article reminds me of one of those kids in high school who demanded people to do things their way, or else! Not to push anything but, it’s a little, discriminatory.
This article is stupid and his opinion’s shitty. Sorry not sorry.
Bugan’s a good example of why we shouldn’t use grammar to determine someone’s capability. She was able to write an article going into her experience as an immigrant writer, grammatical errors and all, and still got her point across.
I don’t think it’s fair to take away opportunities for people just because English isn’t their first language. It’s a racist and bigoted mindset that needs to be addressed more.
People in today’s society should be open to things like this, especially in the workforce.
I stand on that.
