Why is grammar so important?

I didn’t think I would agree with Kyle Wiens at all at first because I think that a grammar test can be a bit much, especially for a job. After reading Wiens article, “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why.”, I have to say that I agree with him when it comes to administering grammar tests because someone can be a great worker but if they don’t know how to properly apply grammar then that goes down the drain. I think the grammar test is especially important for a company such as iFixit because it’s all about writing online repair manuals and, without good grammar, people will think the company is untrustworthy and illiterate. I would definitely do the same thing if I was in Weins position, because if my potential employees couldn’t differentiate the difference between “to” and “too”, I would immediately make the decision not to hire them because obviously, they don’t know the basics so I wouldn’t view them as worthy of doing tasks that require any kind of thought. I think that the only reason for judgment to be curved is based on English being a person’s first language or having a disability revolving around reading or writing.

Carmen Bugan, in “Being an immigrant writer in America today”, writes a beautiful piece that details her family’s struggle in her home country as well as the terror she faces as she looks at America today. I agree with Bugan that we need to pull from other languages and enhance English through the beauty, passion, and pain of other countries- the cultures should be shared and combined so that the thoughts around the world are heard, seen, and read. I also have concerns when it comes to America today and the pathway that America is heading down due to the control of the government. Not to get political, but we’ve been absolutely screwed with presidents for the last seven years and it feels like there is no positive end in sight. Everybody is too scared to revolt and the best we can do is to protest, but even then, we aren’t heard. I agree that bringing in languages from other countries should happen as I feel like it can open the eyes of many Americans and cause this country to progress in a more positive manner.
