Top 20 Rules & Not Winning!

After reading “Stephen King’s Top 20 Rules for Writers, by Lauren Passell and “Not Winning the Nobel Prize”, by Doris Lessing I feel two ways about both articles. Reading the first article was interest. The rules that Stephen King supposedly follows are quite interesting. Not using adverbs and not worrying about making other people happy are two rules that stuck out to me. I was taught adverbs should always come after an action to describe the action better. Yet, the Stephen King is saying not to use them. Worrying about not making other people happy is also so strange to me. In english classes we are taught to write for an audience and not for ourselves. Therefore, it was genuinely strange to read about not making other people happy.

Reading the second article was truly compelling. Especially after reading about the Top 20 Rules and comparing that to the second article, it was as if Lessing didn’t hit not a single one of Stephen King’s rules. Her article was very compelling and appealing to the audience. She also ended her article in a very emotional way that those reading would feel.

In my opinion, I feel as though the 20 rules of writing aren’t something that should be followed by everyone. Writing is what you want it to be and it depends on what the author is trying to get across. All authors are different and are going to target their audience the way they see fit. In conclusion, I will write the way that I believe expresses who I am as an author, instead of trying to fit myself into a box.
