Improving Writing & Employment

Self-Awareness Within Writing

The author Tim Gillespie of the article, “Becoming Your Own Expert – Teachers As Writers” makes a very good point when discussing the fact that we as teachers need to write more in order to efficiently teach our students how to write. Gillespie makes the argument that it takes a writer to be able to judge another writer. For example, if a group of students are complaining about a specific writing assignment given by the teacher, the teacher should take the time to complete the assignment themselves and understand why it could possibly be challenging or confusing from their point of view. It is also important to constantly be writing as a teacher so they can understand why some students may struggle with it. There are going to be groups of students that perform better with writing assignments than others, and that’s okay! As a teacher it is important to understand that every student is different and every individual has their own process for writing. Understanding this and giving students some freedom, or options, in what or how they can write will give all students the same opportunity to complete the assignment and express themselves in a way they know best. Also, having the awareness and ability to revise your own work will help when revising student work. Self-awareness is an important skill to have as a writer in order to help other writers, in this case students, improve their writing skills. At the end of the day, you cannot help others if you cannot help yourself first. As a future educator, I plan on taking this into my own teaching and continuing to write and improve my skills for the benefit of not only myself, but for my students as well.

Resume Writing

The article “Writing the Conventional Resume” by Joe Schall was very informative and detailed in what exactly a resume should include. It broke down each section of a resume and went into detail about how these sections should be written. A point that Schall made that really stood out to me was that individuality is very important to keep in mind and show when writing a resume. You want to write a resume that shows who you are and what you are capable of, so steering away from general descriptions would be best. Giving some sort of explanation as to why you should be hired is only part of the resume and should not be the entire thing. Instead, it is important to show off some individuality and what you have already done so they can decide for themselves whether or not you are a good fit for the job. Being yourself and showing who you really are will build a very strong resume and show the job you are going for what you are capable of. It is also important to note that any experience is important to put on a resume since most experience can relate to the job you are applying to in one way or another.
