E. Shelley Reid’s Ten Ways To Think About Writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing Students is an insightful guide to help college writing students increase their writing skills. Reid’s article consists of ten metaphors. Each metaphor presented by Reid explains unique perspectives on the writing process and how to properly use it. When reading through the passage I was automatically confused. The wording Reid uses is hard to comprehend. She explains examples regarding things like cooking, kindergarteners, or any regular topics. I was truly confused until the end of each paragraph explaining her metaphoric examples. The way Reid gets you to say “OH I GET IT NOW” really shows how talented of a writer she is.
Show and Telepaths
Show and Telepaths was the second metaphor Reid presented in her passage. The show is explained as if someone is saying they have an item then explaining the details of the item and expecting people to believe it. You can not see what is being told because there is no item. If there is no show, there is no credibility. If you have no show in your writing the reader won’t believe you which will cause disbelief and then in turn a waste of time. The telepath is explained as if you and a friend say something with not a lot of detail they would understand exactly what you mean. This paragraph is telling you to show in your writing so readers will know what you are writing and that the readers aren’t telepaths. The reason why I like this metaphor by Reid the most is because, in my writing, I would have times when I would write but not show or explain my reasoning, or my story. As a writer, we can’t read minds so explain your writing.
