After reading the four articles covering each skill: Strategy, Credibility, Resumés, and Cover Letters I realized I had minimal knowledge on creating a good resumé and cover letter. I have only had temporary jobs with kids such as summer camps or retail. I have not been properly trained into writing an exemplary cover or resumé that would make me stand out. I believe this skill is important to all future students who are entering the job world. The “real-job”, a “grown up” job because it better prepares us for this when the time comes. This is not something that was taught in school while I was growing up. In “Stephen King’s Top 20 Rules For Writers” by Lauren Passell, the first rule stuck out to me. The reason is because at times people tend to limit themselves in writing to fit the standard of others. Personally, I have done this myself because I always check the rubric of my assignments instead of free writing; my writing has felt shaped into what is expected of me. When it comes to applying for jobs, it feels as though I am writing what “they” want me to say in order to fit a role. Furthermore, the article “Writing the Conventional Résumé” by Joe Schall, Schall is able to give the audience proper guidance when it comes to formulating a well-written resumé that can guarantee a job landing. The assignment coming up with creating a resumé and cover letter can help me be prepared with this process when I graduate and start job hunting.
