Why Study Writing?

Elizabeth Wardle says that you can’t teach writing in general. I don’t completely agree with her but I also don’t disagree with her. We can always learn and improve our writing. There are many aspects of writing to be able to teach it and learn it efficiently within a class.

I have been giving this assignment to write about ‘why study writing.’ I am still unsure as to what I should write even as I type this out. Now I know that writing can be used to express many different emotions and be formatted in several different ways. From jotting down shopping lists, to filling out a check and doing homework. Writing is all around us and yet we only think of about it when the time arises.

Studying writing leads to the question of not how to write but what to write. A writer writes with the intention that a reader will gain something out of reading. The reader or audience is the ones who control what is written. The writer won’t produce anything that isn’t related to the subject if it won’t keep the readers attention.

Wardle states that “Writing is always in particular.” This statement is true as we don’t write anything the same way with the same objective in mind. There’s a purpose for it and that purposes changes depending on the situation. Today I’m writing to complete this assignment to make a post on. When writing in my journal the value in the writing is the release my feelings and being able to reread it and work through those thoughts The idea of writing will alter due to the situation.
