Grammar and language are two of the most important factors of writing and communication. They dictate how comprehensible your writing is and how people view your work. Using more sophisticated language and better grammar will lead people to viewing your work in a more positive light. Although you probably haven’t thought about it too much, the grammar and language you use can heavily affect how others may view you.

In Kyle Wien’s article “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why.”, he goes into how much of a stickler he is for using proper grammar, such as proper use of punctuation and commas. He also talks about how much it drives him crazy when people fail to meet his standards of grammar, and how he won’t hire people for the same reason. This goes to show how poor or improper grammar can cause people to look down on you or think lesser of you, as it imply you aren’t a good speaker or writer with errors present in your writing like that.

In Zachary Martin’s article “African American Language is Good English”, he goes into the opposite direction, talking about how African American slang and English are still proper English. As an example, he goes into how rappers use slang in order to diversify their language and make their lyrics more interesting. This article goes into how not using proper language can actually help you by helping your language and writing stand out more and be more unique. It may also help people notice you and pay attention if your language is unique and stands out.
