Technology use in the classroom is beneficial to students!

After reading John Warner’s article on why his policy changed in his classroom about cellphone/laptop/device use it opened my eyes to understand why teachers may not want students to use devices in their classrooms. Of course you think of the obvious reasons such as “you can be doing something else on the internet or looking up the answers”, but it made me reflect on how comfortable we all got as students having the internet so accessible all the time. In one of the reply tweets from the original tweet that started the conversation Sara-Goldrick Rab says “Classrooms aren’t prisons. Undergrads aren’t children. Respect them, earn it back.” By Rab saying “classrooms aren’t prisons” it made me think about how when we are told “you can’t use technology in the classroom!” it almost feels like teachers are taking a huge part of us away because of how often we are using technology. I also liked the fact that she said “Undergrads aren’t children. Respect them, and earn it back” this is so important because I feel as though sometimes professors forget that majority of college students are well over 18 so it is important to give us that freedom rather than create a power dynamic. It creates for a better learning environment for both the students & the teacher.

After reading Travis Bradbury’s article about Multitasking, I learned that I need to slow down. I realized that I am constantly trying to multitask & do 100 things at once but it is states in the article that people who multitask produce the work of what would look like an 8 year old produced. By multitasking I am trying to get myself ahead, but by not producing my best work that is actually counterproductive of what I am trying to do. This article was a good wake up call for me to slow down & make more time for myself to complete my work.
