In today’s digital age, technology serves as both a useful tool and a major distraction for college students. Staying focused while writing can be difficult due to distractions such as social media and notifications. Two readings, Ann N. Amicucci’s Four Things Social Media Can Teach You About College Writing—and One Thing It Can’t and Lottridge et al.’s The Effects of Chronic Multitasking on Analytical Writing, provide useful insights into how technology affects students’ writing and focus.
According to Amicucci’s article, while social media can help students write more concisely and explore new ideas, it can also lead to distractions. Students frequently find themselves scrolling through feeds or responding to messages while completing assignments. This constant switching between tasks disrupts focus and makes it difficult to produce quality work. Although social media can help with brevity, it also encourages multitasking, which can reduce writing productivity.
Lottridge et al. emphasize the risks of multitasking, particularly when it comes to writing. Their research demonstrates that chronic multitaskers—students who juggle tasks such as texting or checking social media while writing—have a lower quality of work. Multitasking diverts attention and slows the writing process. When your attention is constantly diverted, it becomes more difficult to think critically and organize ideas.
In my personal opinion and as a woman in college, I see social media as both a tool and a distraction. If the technology is used accordingly such as reading an article you found on Facebook or Instagram to use for a paper, I see no problem in that. Unfortunately, if it is used to pass the time and procrastinate that is when productivity will drop immensely. I say if the tool/technology is used productively, then I can see the benefits that come with that usage.
In conclusion, technology can be both beneficial and distracting to college students. As the readings show, social media and multitasking frequently interfere with the writing process. Students can improve their focus and work quality by implementing distraction-reduction strategies. Finding a balance between using technology effectively and avoiding distractions is essential for better writing in today’s digital world.
