When reading “An Introduction to and Strategies for Multimodal Composing” by Melanie Gagich, she gives strategies and tips towards creating multimodal texts. She mentions in her chapter of how some people might not know what ‘multimodal’ mean because in High School we only wrote 5 paragraph essays, and this was something I chuckled at because I only heard the word ‘multimodal’ for the first time in college when asked to make a presentation. And whats funny is that she mentions that specific scenario as another example of when someone might hear of that word. Even when I was assigned with that presentation, I had no clue what it meant. The author goes on the list the different types of modes of communication and after looking and reading about the different types, I think that the most important or most effective type in our day and age is the visual mode. For this type she uses the example of a Facebook post. This mode I think is most effective because it’s incredibly easy for the audience to take it in and understand its purpose, compared to the 2nd or 3rd figures which are more word based. Often people won’t read things too word based or if they do they might get tired. However although Figure 4 is also a photo, I think that figure 1 is more effective just because of the addition of the short caption. The photo of Michelle Obama is obviously powerful and sends a message however, with the phot of the dog and the addition of the caption, context is given to even those who might have a hard time finding it in the photo of Michelle Obama.
