Just Write

In Ten Ways To Think About Writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing Student E. Shelley Reid starts off with a great way to put writing. Writing is difficult when you have a strict set of rules to follow. I for one can agree with this because I feel limited and almost put in a box with nowhere to go when there are too many limitations. When there are no set rules or topics you have the ability to do whatever you want.

The “don’ts” of writing is another thing that trips me up. “Don’t go past the word count.” “Don’t use too many transitions.” “Don’t state your opinion.” Are all examples of rules I have been told to follow in some of my writing assignments. I feel almost like a little kid being told not to do something. When these limits don’t exist I believe that it gives so much more opportunity to free yourself and truly enjoy the writing process. Of course there are rules we must follow like grammar. That is non negotiable for any piece of writing.

I also agree with the statement that teachers always mention your audience. Yes, the audience is highly important to think about in your work, you must identify who your audience is and put your ideas together to get your points across to them.

Overall, she has a point that writing is never easy. You are going to fail and that is totally fine as well as normal. That is all part of the writing process.
