George Dilia speaks on how we should rethink the shitty first draft. From Miss. Lamott, Bird by bird “The first draft is the child’s draft, where you let it all pour out and then let it romp all over the place knowing that no one is going to see it and that you can shape it later.” and I honestly agree. I look at the first draft as a moment where we as writers get to truly write all our ideas. It’s not necesarilly shitty but simply your first time, and the fun part is that we can always go back and edit. As writers we have the first draft, which gets peer reviewed and then the second draft you are getting closer to what you are seeking. That final draft, you are close to your perfection which then allows you to also see your journey from when you started and your finishing product. It’s okay to write “shitty” just get your thoughts on a paper, and then allow it to flow from there. Dilia is a ruthless reviser, not allowing himself to even start with a shitty sentence. He believes that once you write, how you start will allow the rest of the document to flow. In that first draft there’s ton of revision, polishing “tinkering” therefore it’s never really ‘shitty.” Personally, at the end life is all about simply writing your opinions. If some believe that you can have shitty writing, that is there persepective how they perseve life. If others believe your first draft is beautiufl, that’s fine too. At the end of the day we should always write the way that works for us. As we write just check back how our thoughts came up and mingle from there!
