The Significance of Collaboration in Writing

In the essay, “Writing “Eyeball To Eyeball”: Building A Successful Collaboration by Rebecca Ingalls, she emphasizes the importance of collaboration in writing. Prior to reading this, I did not understand nor appreciate this idea. All of my life I have been taught to write alone that suddenly the idea of writing with others was scary. The idea of having to work as a group with other people will always be something I am afraid of. While it may sound silly, not everyone works the same and everyone has a different writing process. Some have better word choices than others, grammar is different for people, and overall the ideas that each writer has are different. These are the reasons why at first I was doubting Ingalls. I learned that collaboration in writing is an important skill to have. The reason for that being is because it builds trust, communication skills, and shared goals overall. Working with other people will never be an easy task, but working with others prepares you in a way when stepping into the career of your choice. In any career, there will be times where you have to work with other people in order to get something done or even in meetings. Building social skills whilst learning to respect the ideas of others is major when it comes to this. An example of one successful collaboration is the success of a well-known band: The Beatles. The essay states, “In this merging of minds between artists and friends, one would write a verse, and the other would finish the song; one would start the “story” of a song, and the other would see the plot through (Sheff 139–40). Ultimately, this collaboration would form the core of a band that would produce countless number one hits, sell over one billion records, and reinvent rock and roll (“The Beatles”).” As this evidence shows that working together on different parts (puzzle pieces) can all come together in a beautiful puzzle. Different ideas should be welcomed, more so, invited. Everyone has different ideas and opinions and that can be such a great thing if it is normalized more.
