Throughout E. Shelley Reid’s writing, she explains in specific detail ten different key points that should always be kept in mind when writing college essays. Reid’s main points throughout her writing emphasizes that the writer should always understand their audience, always communicate their ideas with great in depth detail, yet keeping the audience engaged. Reid emphasizes key points to have a successful papers. Always have clear and detailed information that always gain the audiences attention, make sure ideas are always clear and easy to understand, and when writing about what you know and have knowledge on a topic, this makes the audience more interested and develops a sense of trust within your writing. Providing the most detail possible in each paragraph gives the audience a better understanding on the topic that is being talked about, and makes it easier to understand the point you are trying to make. When writing a paper, taking advice and feedback from different readers is one of the most important things to take in and accept their feedback as it could potentially make great changes to create a stronger writing. Reid provided three rules, 1. Write about what you are interested in, 2. Show, don’t tell and 3. Adapt the story to your audience. When given these three simple rules, there is a lot of detail that is given behind these rules. When Reid talks about the idea of showing and not telling, she means that someone can describe something in clear details, but if there isn’t in depth details and does not allow the audience to visualize what they are reading, they won’t get a sense of trust, and will not believe the author. Reid then goes on to talk about always making sure the details are factual. Reid wants to successfully prove her point that showing instead of telling will keep the audience engaged, interested, and gain a sense of trust. At the end of Reid’s writing, she emphasizes to the audience to always annotate. Highlighting almost is like a reminder, and is something that can be looked back on. Reid believes that practicing writing is just like practicing a sport. Always keep trying and never give up on what you love to do.
