Has technology made students life easier?

The article “Pedagogy, Connectivity, Multimodality, and Interdisciplinary” by Carmen Luke gives readers an insight into how technology plays a role in influencing us. In today’s world, compared to a few years ago, we depend on technology for mostly everything, including work, school, communication, etc. Technology has made it so easy for us to access many things.

Luke talks about how students are no longer writing information down like they used to a few years ago. As technology gets better, it makes it easier for students. “Longhand pencil-and-paper writing is being replaced by keyboarding and, increasingly, iconic witting (button clicks).” I believe Luke compares today’s world to the past world. In the past, students had to actually pay attention in class and write everything down because they had no access to the presentation a teacher would give; everything was paper. In today’s world, we rely on teachers uploading the slides and having access to Google, etc.

Luke makes the point that even though technology has made every individual’s life so much easier, it may have a negative impact on children’s lives. “Such concerns and anxieties over children’s alleged loss of innocence and their vulnerability to media…” Meaning, students have access to many media platforms that are stripping them of their wholesomeness.

Even though my major is English, and I have no idea what career I want to make it out of, I have thought about teaching. Reading this article gives me an insight of how technology may be easily influenced by students and their teachings.
