Since we are in grade school, every teacher has told us something different about how we should be writing. Some teachers believe that using “I” in writing is a mortal sin whereas in this week’s articles we see using “I” in your writing can be very beneficial. Going back to last week’s article, when Gee mentioned code switching, Sister Molly Heine talks about how code switching is also beneficial in our writing. Our writing pieces will always have a different purpose so the way you write a Research paper is going to be different from how you write an Argumentative essay.
The way she best described this was by saying, “It’s like when we speak to our boss versus when we speak with our friends. We may be speaking about the same continent, but we would have a different language or a different style and voice.” You can always get your point across and make your writing individualized but it’s all about being able to switch the language you are using to reach your target audience.
After reading this article it was also inspiring to gain more confidence in my writing to produce my best work. When you are confident in what you are talking about your point always comes across more precisely and clearly so the same idea shines through in your writing. I think the best way to gain confidence in your writing is to just keep practicing and through all of my college writing classes I feel as though I have gained a certain sense of confidence through all of my practice. I am confident in my writing but also aware that growth will always be necessary so I appreciated that both of these articles touched on that idea.
