As I am studying at Kean University to get my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, I have found this reading by Carmen Luke fascinating. I liked this reading because it discusses how technology influences how we teach. We depend on technology so much in today’s society. Teachers use it to make PowerPoint presentations and assign homework, which is a crucial tool in today’s world. I specifically want to point out this line in the text that states, “As more texts become available in digital form, users access information in different ways that have potentially profound ramifications for reading and
Writing.” With this being said, I believe that what Luke is trying to conclude is that with today’s technology, things are more accessible. What once was going to the library to learn about something is now simply by googling it. Although this may seem like a good thing, Luke also discusses the negative side of technology. She states that “Such concerns and anxieties over children’s alleged loss of innocence and their vulnerability to media and market seductions render the new technologies easy targets as they readily become objects of generational and political responses to the dis- courses and practices of new capitalism-its affiliated lifestyles, identities, and attitudes that they have come to represent.” This may seem like a lot of information to process at once, but it is strictly saying that with the new technology, students have access to many more platforms than they once did. As Luke once stated, it is stripping many of the younger students of their innocence. Overall, I was fascinated to learn more about a topic that I have always thought about, and studying to become a teacher will allow me to become more aware of how much technology influences teaching.
