How Literacies Affect Me Professionally

Literacies affect me professionally in a variety of ways. With a plethora of hobbies, literacies related to each one progress me through whichever applies to that specific hobby. For example, digital and visual literacy have strongly impacted my multiple outlets of creativity. Specifically, iMovie has helped me edit and put together visual or audio pieces, whether it be a video that requires sound, or two pieces of audio that need to be synchronized. When I create mashups of songs, I rely entirely on multiple tools all on my smartphone. YouTube, for the videos of the songs or accompaniments, the screen record function on my phone that allows me to save the audio to my camera roll, an app called Moises that can alter the BPM of one song to match the other, and iMovie to edit everything together (I also occasionally use Picsart to make the cover overlaying the video). In that regard, digital and visual literacy most certainly come in handy for me creatively. Another form of literacy that relates to my professional interests is aural literacy. In regards to music, this form of literacy may be an explanation for why I have perfect pitch. I have learned to read and write music, however, I am naturally able to identify a key signature of a song simply by listening to it. This potential aural literacy has sparked my interest in music and desire to learn more about it. Finally, foundational literacy has most certainly played a role in my life, as it has fueled all of my written work, whether academic or creative. Whether I’m writing song lyrics or a paper for class, I use foundational literacy to benefit my skills and further develop my passion to write.
