I think the word literacy needs to have a new definition. Literacy can be described as the ability to read and write however it could mean a lot more than just that. James Paul G talks about how the term language is the wrong way to describe Literacy. He states that grammar is often too associated with language. This here shows the problem I feel like, I think a word should have too much competition for the lack of a better term because the definition of a word should be set in stone unless proven otherwise. Both of these authors challenge the status quo of what literacy is whether it’s the word or in the other= article by Cevetti education. Cevetti talks about how there are multiple different literacies and that it could be difficult to teach K through 12 because of this. In my personal opinion, I feel like this shows even more that the word literacy needs some sort of update. Granted words can have multiple definitions, but from what I gather there’s confusion with this word and like I’ve previously stated, this word should have a more set-in-stone definition. So in conclusion Literacy should have a bit of an update with what the word means because There is confusion on things that surround the word, and since it isn’t just the ability to read and write. I think unless this already is a thing in the dictionary the word literacy should have more to its definition so it can be more accurate.

We’ll talk more about this in a couple weeks, but the fact that you have a more sophisticated and nuanced understanding of a term than what the dictionary provides is actually a sign that you’re learning to think like a member of a specific discourse community. Your last sentence is valid—if you look up the word in a dictionary of rhetoric, you’ll see a lot more detail than in a generic dictionary. That’s because members of specialized communities use words for specialized purposes that go beyond what the general public needs to understand.
