Language may seem very uncomplicated, but James Paul Dee explains that it is quite intricate. Language can be perceived in so many different ways. Something as simple as how a person says something, where the statement is being said, and what situation it is being used in can all change the meaning of the language. Gee goes on to describe how literacy is much more than just reading and writing, it is how the words are being used. Literacy is an evolving thing and changes just about every day, It is the way we use language in different environments and circumstances. It is so important for teachers to ensure they are modernizing their content and strategies along with the rapidly changing world of literature. Linguistics is described as how words come together to create meaning. It is much more than just the words that make up a statement. It is how the words are used to coexist with those around them. Even if a sentence is grammatically correct, at times it can be linguistically incorrect because it is not used in the right context. Gee also describes the different types of discourse. The first one is Primary Discourse which is what is presented to us at a young age through our parents’ vocabulary and use of words. Secondary Discourse is what we learn through school, church, and other clubs that are outside of our immediate home and family. From what I understand, Discourse is dependent on the environment it is used. Expanding our ideas of Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics will greatly change the world of literature and how people interact with one another in different circumstances.
