Grammar and The Professional World

After reading the article “I Won’t hire People Who Use Poor Grammar” by Kyle Wiens, I have to say that I agree and disagree with some of the claims he made. I agree that grammar is important, especially when it comes to businesses or careers that involve a lot of writing. Maintaining a professional image of yourself or the businesses is crucial to maintain credibility, and the majority of that is done through your writing and the way you talk. However, I thought it was weird for Wiens to want the entire staff to be tested grammatically even if their job has nothing to do with writing.

I feel like it’s a common misconception for people to be perceived as stupid when they don’t use grammar properly but it doesn’t always necessarily mean that they can’t do their job properly. For example, people who don’t speak English as their first language may have a hard time using the correct grammar but that doesn’t mean that they don’t understand things or are incapable. In that case I would find it unfair for them to be denied a job. Plus language is always changing and sometimes it’s hard to keep up with all the new rules. Although I would still consider it one of my biggest pet peeves in a friendship or relationship, when they don’t know the difference between your and you’re or there, their, and they’re. That’s still a common mistake in a lot of people around my age and it’s just like how? Because I feel like it’s such a simple concept and something that most of us learned back in second or third grade. It’s almost like a turn off. But at the same time I know that a lot of factors go into gaining that understanding so it’s not right to be judgemental about it, it’s just a preference.
