Technology throughout the last one-hundred years has progressed at a rapid rate and will only continue to improve as time goes in. With that being said, classrooms are using technology for most if not all of the learning students will be doing, so teachers should have a good understanding of technology, right? This is discussed in, “Multiple Literacies, New Literacies, and Teacher Education” by Gina Cervetti, James Damico, and P. David Pearson. The text states, “[…] while many preservice programs require an introductory course in technology, most emphasize the mechanics of computer use more than preparing teachers to integrate technology into the curriculum” (Cervetti, et al.) Teachers should not only have an understanding for technology but multiple literacies as well for their students. By having knowledge on the different types of literacy their students may have, teachers will better assess situations and have no judgement towards them. Students come from all different backgrounds and it is up to teachers to provide a safe learning space where the student doesn’t have to feel a certain type of way for the literacy they have.
Not only should teachers have an understanding for students literacies in school but out of school as well. After all students spend the majority of their time at home or in an outside environment in general, so those factors will impact how students are in school. Not all students will have access to things their classmates or teachers have access to so finding ways to teach students in the ways that will benefit them instead of hold them back is extremely important. They should be able to feel confident in themselves as they learn so they can continue with their education.
