Is Multitasking Harmful?

After going through “Multitasking Damages Your Brain And Career, New Studies Suggest” by Travis Bradberry, my perspective on multitasking has significantly changed. Initially, I considered it a valuable and efficient ability. However, it appears that multitasking might be more harmful than beneficial in several ways. Stanford University research demonstrates that multitasking is less effective than focusing on one task at a time. The study also revealed that individuals constantly exposed to multiple streams of electronic data struggle more with maintaining attention, remembering information, or smoothly transitioning between tasks compared to those who concentrate on a single task at a time. Despite these findings, my personal experience leads me to challenge this conclusion.

For instance, I have successfully engaged in multitasking during lectures by actively listening to the professor while simultaneously taking notes. This capability to listen and note-take concurrently proves my ability to multitask effectively. The study’s findings intrigued me, especially since people who believe in their multitasking abilities, like myself, reportedly performed poorly. Participating in such a study would be fascinating, offering a chance to observe my multitasking capabilities firsthand and determine whether I should continue this practice or focus on one task at a time.

Again it was not until reading this article that made me question if having the ability to multitask is a good or bad skill to have mastered. Overall now I want to try focusing on one specific task at a time and see if I am able to get it done quicker and will be mindful of the quality of the work itself. Meaning is this a good piece of writing. Then I will compare that piece to a piece I wrote while multitasking and that should determine how I would prefer to write from now on.
