In the article Beyond Black on White: Document Design and Formatting in the Writing Classroom by Michael J. Klein & Kristi L. Shackelford they talk about how to format your work or how to design it and the importance of it. Klein and Shackelford state that an overlooked element of design is the visual treatment of text itself, which they refer to the look of the words on the page. I agree with them whenever I am doing my work I focus on my actual writing does it make sense, the grammar, any typos. I mean I make sure my text is all the same Times New Roman and same font size, but I never really focus on the actual design. The authors go over the elements and their definitions to understand them. Your work is more compelling when you know how to apply these principles to your work.The authors goes over how to apply design principles and one example is on a resume. You are able to see the difference if you use the principles your resume looks more appealing. Not knowing how to design your documents make them boring and unattractive. This doesn’t only mean on work with photos but as you can see on any work resumes, essay, articles. Knowing how to design your document makes a big difference whether it is an essay or any kind of document. These techniques are helpful and important to know so that you can better your document design. The authors many examples help you also understand how to apply these techniques to different works.
