To Each Their Own?

Kyle Wiens

Is grammar important? In, “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why” by Kyle Wiens, he deems it to be of the upmost importance. Wiens does come off as a little harsh but like he says, not as harsh as Lynne Truss wit her lightning strikes and unmarked graves shenanigans. I believe Wiens is correct in his ideas. I wouldn’t hire someone who does not know the difference between to an too or there, their, and they’re. And that is not to say typos do not occur and that is okay to an extent. But grammar itself being a problem is a problem to me. Would you rather hire someone who knows the difference between it’s and its or not? Not that I think people that don’t use proper grammar is dumb because no one nor I am perfect. I didn’t know how to use their or there correctly until senior year of high school. But grammar is important and if I were in Wiens position, I am taking grammar into account; grammar test is wild though.

Carmen Bugan

Carmen Bugan shares a powerful story in the article, “Being an immigrant writer in America today“. It is heartfelt and the audience can feel the emotion in the writing. From her writing, the audience can tell the passion that is Bugan as she explains how she felt rebirthed in American writing contrast to her native tongue that is now tainted because of the atrocities going on in her mother land. The form of identity is very much clear.

Though I agree with Kyle Wiens, I do believe in not conforming to the grammar rules in every way shape and form. Reading Carmen Bugan’s story reminded me that having authority and (you) in your writing is just as important as having good grammar. Both are equally as important and should be accounted for in “job hiring”.
