To Write or Not to Write

I think that completely ruling a job candidate out because they made one grammar mistake is a bit far-sided. I don’t think using to instead of too one time should automatically determine your worth to a company. Do I too appreciate the correct usage of grammar? Absolutely. Do I too think that it is important for most employees to use correct grammar? Yes. However, Kyle Wiens in his article “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why.” seems just a little overkill. His writing comes off very harsh to me and this makes it difficult for me to want to agree with him, even if some of his points are partially true. I don’t think the way he acts is a fair way to treat any potential employee for one of his companies.

Carmen Bugan has a relatively fresh point of view in his article “Being an immigrant writer in America today” compared to that of Wiens. He mentions new ideas and instead of criticizing people for making one small grammar error, he encourages other immigrants to use their freedom of speech to their advantage and write. He tells a touching story of how his father was punished and placed in jail for using his speech, and this is an inspiring reminder to take advantage of the tools you are given. To express yourself and your thoughts through writing, whatever that means for you, is something more people should do, and this is a great reminder from Bugan.
