In “What’s Needed is Magic: Writing Advice” from Haruki Murakami presents six points to be able to improve your writing. The six points are “Dedication to writing routine, Persistence, and Endurance, Embrace solitude, Read widely, Trust your instincts, Edit and Revise.” The points that speak to me the most are Dedication, Persistence, and Editing. These speak to me the most because I see it as a mindset to have when it comes to writing, and these connect to that mindset. What I mean by that is you have the dedication to be persistent, and from being persistent, you’ll discover new skills when learning and start learning how to make edits.

The root of it all is dedication because that’s the starting point, and in writing, it has to be something that can be taken seriously to improve and grow. The writing advice that Murakami has given can be taken and altered in different ways, but it will have the same meaning behind it. Believing in yourself is also important. I don’t want to leave out trusting your instincts. This could help build the foundation that you need to keep going. I would think that Murakami’s message would be to have discipline. Nothing comes easy, and writing isn’t easy, no matter your language. This will result in creativity flowing because after doing wide reads, you’ve been exposed to inspiration that can cultivate your own story. Using what you have read is how new stories come about and add to the world we know. Some could be the same, but the plot and the development can have something way better to grasp people’s attention. For example, when you read fantasy books they seem similar but all have a different flow to eat that accounts for everyone’s taste when it comes to reading.
