Sometimes we have to look at what we've accomplished to figure out the future.

The Resume Doesn’t Have to Be Scary

Everyone rolls their eyes when it comes to making a resume for any type of work, myself included. I’ve been working since I was sixteen/seventeen years old and it wasn’t until my job during GameStop did I start thinking about a resume. Yes, it was scary, but honestly, it’s super important and helped myself look at the bigger picture.

The Bigger Picture

What is the bigger picture? It’s simple. Your path for work in the future. I don’t necessarily mean your career path but the start to figuring that out. When you’ve worked a few dozen jobs and compile them all on a single page, it helps to take in and realize what skills you’ve acquired over the years.

For example, before my first real paying job, I invested time into volunteering with kids, babysitting, and taking whatever dog walking gigs I could around my neighborhood. Once I started my first seasonal job at lord & Taylor’s did I find an interest in being behind the scenes. I was essentially a bag boy while there. Restocking all registers with bags and other things on all three floors. It was a fast and always busy which was something I enjoyed.

Later, I tried my hands working in the restaurant industry. Starting as a busser but working my way around running food and even waiting tables. Something I never thought I’d see myself doing. When I applied for GameStop a year later, I created my first ever resume. Looking at my experience in prior jobs and volunteer have made me piece together skills I’ve acquired and helped me find a path that I enjoyed. Sometimes it takes having to stop and look back to see what we’ve accomplished and what else is to come.
