In the world we live in today everyone is trying to get the job. New graduates seek employment after college and people already in the workforce are actively looking for better opportunities. With knowing the basics of how to get a job, how would you apply for whichever job in question. By the time we get into college a lot of people still don’t know how to write a resume or cover letter.

The general idea of a resume is just to write about the skills you possess. Most people however, don’t know that the resume should be written based on the job description and qualifications. Reading the job description and qualifications first sets the tone for the type of information that should be included in the resume. For example if the description says “looking for a hard worker” or “detail oriented” then somewhere in your resume you should include those words. By scooping out main words in the description you can try to include them so that the resume can stand out more.

Cover letters help focus not only the resume but it highlights your qualifications. This is the chance to show how your skills and experience and how it will relate to the employer’s needs for a specific position. Along with showcasing  motivation and the ability to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the specific position and the organization.

If teachers actually taught how to write a resume and cover letter in high school then people would be far more successful in the job hunt. Teachers themselves need to be able to show examples of how things work or should look like. In the article “Becoming Your Own Expert—Teachers as Writers” by Tim Gillespie I believe it it true to be said that writing alongside can help sympathize with students when doing an assignment. I work with kids all day and I am currently teaching them the basics of writing, which i holding a pencil and making letters. Sometimes I’ll switch hands when I’m writing or working on something so I can get an idea of why it might be hard for my students to write out a certain letter. Not only do I understand the possible difficulties but I am able to change it up and find ways that work to help in the future.
