Writing Advice

The first article I read was What’s Needed is Magic: Writing Advice from Haruki Murakami. This is an article written by Emily Temple. She discusses the many strategies that Murakami uses to write. He said that repetition, focusing on one thing at a time, explaining yourself clearly, and having confidence are a few of the many things that should be considered when writing. “You have to believe you have the ability to tell the story, to strike the vein of water, to make the pieces of the puzzle fit together. Without that confidence, you can’t go anywhere. It’s like boxing. Once you climb into the ring, you can’t back out. You have to fight until the match is over.” I like this quote because once you are in it there is no going back. Boosting confidence also boosts the writing piece.

The second article I read was Becoming Your Own Expert written by Tim Gillespie. He believes that teachers need to understand how their assignments impact their students. “When teachers write, we learn empathy for our students. Writing can be a struggle, and this fact is easy to forget if we don’t wrestle regularly with it ourselves. (I worked once with a teacher who thought this a poor reason, saying, “I don’t need to break my arm to sympathize with a student who has a cast.” I find this resistance understandable, since writing can seem at times like breaking an arm.)” I found this very shocking that a teacher would perceive her job like this.
