Navigating your Story

According to Berkenkotter’s article they say that planning, revision, and review is necessary for your writing pieces. Unfortunately, not everyone can agree with this method of writing. For example, when I write I tend to procrastinate or do it at the last minute because when I try to do it days before my brain tells me I still have wiggle room to do it another day and I could be doing something else. I also don’t tend to write down any ideas prior to writing it down. I did notice that in the classes where I wrote some ideas on what to write for each section, my ideas flowed more naturally and easier when I did start to write my paper. It is hard for me to start writing beforehand but it’s because I’m so used to my writing style. I also noticed it’s easier to write at night for me than it is writing in the day because I have no distractions writing at night.

After reading the articles “Decisions and Revisions: The Strategies of a Publishing Writer” by Carol Berkenkotter and “ Response of a Laboratory Rat- Or being Protocoled” by Donald Murray it made sense as to why everyone has their own writing process. It was interesting to see that as a writer we see our best work where we are most comfortable, used to and that our environments are a big factor in our writing. Berkenkotter likes planning, revision and review when writing a paper. What do you think works for you? Do you believe that you should plan out your writing or even write down all your thoughts as you write or just write and see what comes to mind? All of our answers to those questions will most likely vary.
