Writing with a Purpose

After reading “Ten Ways To Think About Writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing Student” by E. Shelly Reid it changed my perspective on the writing process. As a college student we were always taught all the different rules about writing but E. Shelly broke it down to 3 principles. The three principles of writing include: Write about what you know about, are curious about, are passionate about, Show don’t just tell and adapt to the audience and purpose you’re writing for.

First as writers we must go into specifics about what exactly we are talking about so that we are connected to our audience and we are all on the same page about what exactly im trying to speak on. It’s important to do this because if you are very vague on your sentences then what you may be trying to say may not exactly be what your reader is imagining as they are reading your piece of writing. As readers we picture in our heads what the writer is explaining as we read. For example imagine if we say “picture a clear lake” we all may be picturing a completely different lake as there are several lakes we all could have visited around the world. It’s important to write what you know and are curious about because as a writer it will help you out the most. You will be most creative when you write freely about something you’re familiar with or are interested in. Lastly you have to adapt to your audience/ the purpose. By adapting to it you are specifically and directly communicating with that audience through your writing.

Overall I feel as after reading this it actually gave me a sense of relief about writing assignments. It made me realize that I should be writing with a purpose to reach my audience and to express myself through my writing pieces because writing could tell you a lot about the author if you pay close attention.
