In “Ten Ways to Think about Writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing Students,” E. Shelley Reid presents a list of ten metaphors to help students enhance their writing processes. Each metaphor provides a unique lens through which to view writing, illustrating its complexity and fluidity.
Reid begins by connecting the task of writing to a journey, emphasizing that it involves exploration and discovery. This perspective encourages students to view their writing as a process rather than a fixed product, revealing the importance of revisiting and revising their work. As a student, I personally have always had trouble with seeing writing essays and important writings as a journey because I dread this. It feels like a task. Another challenge I have is revisiting and revising my work. This does not imply that I find my writing to be perfect the first time, I just never want to go back to re-read it. Whilst reading this essay, I found myself realizing how vital revisiting my work is to make sure that the writing is at its best. One metaphor that really stood out to me was the ninth one, “Short-Time Writing: Use Your Higher Brain”. The reason why this metaphor stood out to me was because I tend to be that person that Reid was referring to. Someone who always leaves everything for the last minute or late even though I know I can be a much better student. I tend to panic and freak out about the writing that maybe I do not use my higher brain, which is what I gathered after reading this metaphor. Reid is able to give tips and tricks on what to do to activate one’s higher brain in a short amount of time. Moving forward, I will incorporate these skills into my writing when I have my next writing assignment.
