First Drafts

As a college student, I have always struggled with writing first drafts. I find myself over analyzing the writing process and self-doubting which can hinder my progress. I know most of my papers aren’t perfect but I know I can improve my writing skills if I get the help that is needed. But after reading Anne Lamott’s “First Drafts” and George Dila’s “Rethinking the First Draft” I now understand the importance of embracing imperfection in the writing process. Lamott emphasizes that the first drafts are meant to be imperfect. She describes it as the process of writing as a journey filled with doubt. She encourages writers to embrace their imperfections and allow themselves to make mistakes. As for Dila, he argues that the focus should be on the exploration that comes with the first draft rather than looking for flawless writings . He suggests that writers should view their draft as a starting point that can be refined in the final draft.

Both perspectives on the first draft have been explained perfectly for us students to understand and to have less pressure on ourselves. A lot of us college students have set high expectations and want to strive for perfection in our writings. But however, their insights reminded me that writing is a process of growth and evolution and that it is ok to make mistakes. Instead I see them as opportunities to grow and improve my writing process by taking risks and experimenting with my writing. Writing shouldn’t be something that makes you feel anxious, it should be something that you can enjoy.
