Drafts won’t ever be perfect

In the article “Shitty first Drafts” by Lamott she explains that many of us write shitty first drafts but it’s okay because no one is going to read it. So if you decide to write your ideas all over your draft that is perfectly fine. She explains that the best way to start writing is to just start typing or writing with a pencil and let the thoughts flow on the paper. Lamott says that the first draft is just to put anything down on paper, the second draft is where you fix it up and the third draft is where we check if it’s almost perfect, we check for any silly mistakes etc.

While writing papers it may be extremely hard for some of us because we have too many thoughts but we can’t seem to understand how to put them together in writing. As Lamott would say we need to isolate the mouses (thoughts) in our heads by putting them in jars. But, this is exactly why we should let our first drafts flow and put everything we are thinking down. Writer’s block happens to most because we try to make sure that our first draft looks like our final draft when that’s not what we should be aiming for. For example as I am writing I struggle to start my writing piece because I feel as if I have to start off strong. I should be telling myself it’s okay if it’s not perfect, or there’s too many thoughts because this piece is only going to get fixed up! As a writer we should just try to aim to be creative in our writing.
