Is my first Draft Bad?

Every time I have a writing assignment, I am quick to check the structure or style it has to be done in. I find that writing in the way I am told to write is a lot more difficult than writing normally. I find myself constantly being distracted when it’s a writing assignment where I have to follow guidelines because it just doesn’t seem fun, and when I write, I love to write with flexible rules.

In the article “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamott, she argued that we as the writers should let go of need and write the “shitty” first draft because, at the end of the day, that draft can lead to clarity for the upcoming second and possibly third draft. She had made a really valid point, and I agreed with her because I can personally relate to it. The point she made was basically how writers focus too much on perfection and how we shouldn’t question our paper; we should just let go and write.

Hearing someone telling me to just write is not as easy to do. I always feel like something is wrong with my paper, but I think that’s why it takes me so long to write a paper because I focus too much on the words themselves than my creative ideas/topic. I feel like many people can also agree with me, and it’s not like the first draft will be submitted; it has to be edited, etc., but it made me look at my drafts a different way. Not only that, but I believe first drafts help build that paper and the whole concept of what the paper is about.
