Why Collaborate ?

In the article by Rebecca Ingalls, she discusses why it is important to work together in classrooms. Working in teams early on in school prepares us for the more serious problem solving we will be tasked with in our jobs. If we get used to collaborating on projects sooner, working in teams wont be as bad later on. Working in teams also builds skills outside of just problem solving. When working on a group project you can build great communication skills which is something I have experienced. I am not the most social or extroverted person so working in groups used to really overwhelm me. However, the more I did it the more I came out of my shell and would enjoy group work. Group projects also help us with discipline and integrity when it comes to tasks. Deadlines are important to meet, and making sure you do your part in the project is extremely crucial as well. With a regular assignment there is less pressure and you may even find yourself slacking or getting lazy. However, when you have the pressure of a whole group expecting you to do your part it is a bigger burden and gives you more reason to provide what is needed. As long as you are all doing your part, and working through any potential issues together as a group as well as effectively communicating the results usually show for themself and the task or project is done very well. Once the project is done, you can reflect back on how well you worked as a team.
