Collaborative Writing: A blessing or curse

Collaborative writing is any writing that involves any input by multiple people, whether it be research, planning, or writing, towards a completed piece. There’s a range of situations where collaborative writing is needed, from work assignments to classwork. Nancy Allen shared in her article, found that the make-up of the group from how labor is divided can effect the group and how ‘in-sync’ they are, effectively showing how good their collab will turn out.

In my experience, I tend to do my best writing solitary, at least in terms of actual writing. When I work with others I often have to depend on their data or study to complete a response when in a group study. I had trouble being social and had few friends and thus for those reasons, I disliked group projects. I rather do it alone because to me it was easier and I didn’t have to rely on others to do my work. However, when it comes to editing, I much prefer the input of others when it comes to editing. I understand how my writing should go and thus don’t notice simple mistakes as well as liking my writing enough to not find a problem with it. I prefer the opinions of others as they aren’t familiar with my work and thus are a lot better at noticing issues that I wouldn’t. Peer-editing in my opinion helps make sure your point is getting across perfectly. If the editor can’t understand then it’s unlikely whoever it’s meant for won’t be able to ether.
