Should you use “I” in your Writing?

As a future educator, it is extremely important for me to understand the complex ideas of what is and what is not appropriate in writing. We are usually taught not to use personal pronouns during professional writing or essays. Many schools have taught students to keep personal experiences and perspectives out of writing because it causes the writing to be subjective. Yet avoiding personal pronouns forces you to be objective and creates a narrow barrier in writing, especially when you include research in your writing. As said in the text, it is normalized to see researchers as subjects because of the absence of personal pronouns. I believe if you put “I” in front of a statement, it makes it harder for the statement to be seen as true. the statement becomes arguable and can be disproven easier.

I believe using personal pronouns can be hard because it makes it challenging to separate your own reflection from the facts you get from your research. To ensure your writing is believable while using personal pronouns, your claims need to stand out compared to the researchers, and you need to have pride in your work and opinions. Personally, I find it very difficult to use personal pronouns in an essay form, but the text made me realize that using first person can be beneficial for transitioning into a new subject in your writing. Overall, I thought the text was very informative, and it gave me a new opinion on using the word “I” in my writing.
