Struggles with Feedback

When receiving feedback for anything, especially an assignment related to writing, it is really difficult to use the feedback. Sometimes the individual who gives feedback may not be specific or clear with it, or the person receiving the feedback may feel slightly defensive. Anytime I received feedback, I always thought of it as a negative thing. But it’s actually quite the opposite because it helps with building that work for stronger writing.

Being a college student, I have gotten plenty of feedback. From elementary school to college, I can only remember certain feedback from certain teachers. Some are negative, and some are positive. The article “What’s That Supposed to Mean? Using Feedback on Your Writing” by Jillian Grauman I felt a connection somehow that was very related. The feedback I have received always comes with this overwhelming yet off-track feeling because I have straightforward feedback, but how can I apply it to my work?

Instead of feeling defensive and losing confidence from feedback, Jillian tells us that the feedback an individual can give should be used as a tool to improve your writing. She mentions “growth writing,” which is basically our ability to write and a mindset to grow and not be afraid of the mistakes we make throughout the writing.

By applying the feedback to the individual work, it can help them, as writers, develop different ways to succeed in their work. By understanding the feedback, it can help identify different perspectives and criticisms and develop a better way to do the work.
