As I read this article, Reading and Writing without Authority, she discusses the importance of receiving understanding within the audience and the purpose of composing written text. One of the most compelling aspects of their argument was the impact of achieving the redefined authority in writing practices. Exposing this powerful point not only enhances creativity but also touches on critical thinking so that people can learn to question and engage the ideas of others. A crucial point the authors mention is the need for writers to consider the audience when creating something. For example, some college students may struggle to be a commanding voice when writing assignments. Ann points out that you must knowingly know who will read your work. It is essential because you, as the writer, must determine your tone, style, and content in your work. Some new writers don’t think in depth about that. Some tend to write and follow what they know or think they know, which goes behind writing in general. Everyone develops their different styles and tones regarding reading and writing. As the authors complete a study on two students within their reading and writing behaviors, they discover that one student reads passively instead of focusing and engaging with the given content. It shows how important it is to develop a sense of power for academic achievement among college students. For students to improve in this, they must use critical writing and reading to build their arguments within their writing. Ann and Cheryl want to help students in the best possible way, from being passive to now changing over into being confident in their academic discussions.
