What Contributes To A Person Becoming An Authoritative Writer?

In Elementary, Middle, and even High School we learned to give credit to authors when using their work as evidence to back up our statements by placing quotation marks around the sentence/s that we take from that work. As if we suppose to agree with every statement they make and not have the audacity to dare to take any authority to challenge their writing. There is this saying that “With age comes wisdom.” (Oscar Wilde). Even though that may not necessarily hold true for everyone, in the case of Roger’s, and Janet’s writing, that evidence is definitely present. Penrose and Geisler even mention it in the text (Reading and Writing Without Authority) “Confidence in one own’s authority is assumed to increase generally with age…” That proverb can also be correlated with higher education as well, which makes him more knowledgeable. “We found Roger’s reading and writing behaviors to be consistent with views of knowledge as constructed.” (Penrose and Geisler).

What Type of Writer Are You?

Janet’s writing reminds me of the types of papers I had to write in high school. You know when the teacher asks you to read a passage and find three things you either agree or disagree with, then write your five (5) paragraphs essay. I even notice a little of Janet in me. Making every effort including paraphrasing and leaving out certain information that would require arguments. Penrose and Geiser reference this behavior in Janet’s writing. “Janet’s goal, however, was not to evaluate claims but to search for facts. Claims and proposals in the reading often became facts in Janet’s notes.” I now realize that those types of assignments often force students to ignore their true feelings. However, the way Roger writes it’s like opening a can of worms. Allowing the opportunity for individuals to share their points of view. I may have been writing like Janet, however, I’ve adopted Roger’s way of writing. I not only enjoy presenting arguments but I find excitement in proving them.
