The study conducted was to observe and assess the difference in academic performance when tackling topics of discussion. The subjects(named Janet and Roger) possess different knowledge on the provided topic, and they were put against one another to compare and contrast. Roger being an experienced professional within the academic world supplied him with an advanced comprehension of subjects. Janet was still an undergraduate whose writing style in essays lacked confidence and authority. How? Because, unlike Roger, Janet failed to claim her own position on what she discussed in her paper. Authority is a powerful part of writing that’s key to claim your stance in your paper.

The cool part about words is that they can serve many different purposes. Words and grammar are two powerful tools that we use in our daily lives for different reasons. Language and grammar are also tools that have a big impact on our daily lives. Parts of our lives that are affected include how we communicate, how we comprehend, how we deliver our sentences, and more. When I speak, one of the things that matters most is that my message is clearly received. With that said I try to articulate what I am saying, using specific vocabulary, and language, and the same with writing but including grammar and writing points.

Identity, genres, and other writing mechanics have a special relationship with literature and writing pieces. Activity theorists such as David Russel stress the importance of writing and identity relationships. Identity is described by sociohistoric theories as a “complex construction of the various signifying practices formed by the various discourses, and sign systems”. Identity makes up our existence. Identity is used when we speak, work, write, draw, act, or do anything that involves our personal input. How you express your identity through writing, shows your level of authority, knowledge of the various genres, and other tools of literature. Key parts to make a piece of writing your own, and meaningful. Or not?
