Expressing “I” in Writing

Tags:

When I first started getting into writing, my favorite word to use was “I.” I have always wondered why I choose to write more formally. It may be because, growing up in high school, I was taught that in an academic essay, “I” signifies the presence of my own voice, although it was not appropriate because some teachers said it weakened my arguments within my essay. I couldn’t help it. I used it for the majority of my high school essays. Maddalena argues that using first person tense will allow writers to establish a personal connection with other readers. She encourages writers to use their voices and experiences in their writing because it enhances the depth and brightness of their work. As writers use the word “I,” they will express their unique aspects by connecting their personal experiences with the topics they will discuss. I love this because, as a student, I can share my own perspectives while building a crossover between individual insight and academic discourse. This makes my scholarly work to be more relatable and persuasive. Maddalena’s points will create more engaging writers and encourage critical reflection. Since I have been back in school, I have been trying to improve my writing, which makes me feel a lot better after reading Maddalena’s article. It is okay to put my perspectives in my writing. I will continue to put my own thoughts and experiences into all my upcoming essays. More college and even high school students should know about this article because it will impact their assignments.
