Identity and Authority

In Elizabeth Wardle’s piece Identity, Authority, and Learning to Write in New Workplaces, she explains how we need authority in our writing. She discusses how writing in new environments, such as a workplace for example, requires authority in our work to build confidence within ourselves. Wardle also explains that this is the identity factor that shows a little bit of your personality and who you truly are. It can explain things you like, why you think the way you do, ultimately it’s what makes you different from the rest. I know I personally struggle sometimes with the identity factor in my work. For example, these blog posts. Sometimes I find it extremely difficult to read an article that is assigned and relate it to myself let alone put my own personal identity into the work when writing.

Don’t be like Alan

Going back to the topic of authority from what Wardle said, I believe that it is one of the most important aspects in a piece of work. Once you gain the authority or feel that you have gained it, this gives the confidence within your paper. This is what sets your work apart from the rest because people will truly believe and possibly agree with you when you have the confidence factor attached. It’s not always important to have someone agree with you, but in professional settings you do want others to take you seriously. It is also key to remember that confidence is everything; however, never be like Alan who eventually got fired for being overly confident to the point where coworkers disagreed with his way of going about his work.
