Is Feedback The Key?

Jillian Grauman

In, “What’s That Supposed to Mean? Using Feedback On Your Writing“, Jillian Grauman explains the importance of feedback is to a students writing. Feedback on students writing, if negative, can have a the opposite effect of the point behind the feedback for the student. As Grauman explains, “And it’s also likely that at some point the feedback you received hurt your feelings. Maybe the feedback made you feel like a failure.” (para 1) I believe this to be true because my dad is an English teacher. As a result of this, any writing assignments I had growing up, he would be first up to review my work. Being that I am his son, he would only want the work I give to my teacher to be perfect. He would thoroughly revise my work and critique it as if I was a college student at middle school age. From this criticism and feedback at a young age, it improved my writing and teachers were very impressed with my work. Grauman breaks down the three challenges people have when using feedback on their writing and how to get past them. First she explains that you cannot see the writing ability you have as an unchangeable character trait and instead have a “growth mindset”. She says, “Instead, we should have a “growth mindset” toward our abilities to write, a mindset that measures success by our ability to grow and isn’t steeped in fear of how many mistakes we make.” (para 8) Then Grauman explains the importance of deciphering your feedback. She suggests to digest every form of feedback you have received and to listen, and to be open minded. Lastly to determine the takeaways from the feedback. Establishing the feedback that will help develop your writing to what you want it to be. Facing this challenges can improve a writers work drastically and realize feedback is the backbone to good writing. Will Smith ironically made a video I always go back to seek motivation through challenges.
